Shaman King (JP: シャーマンキング) is a Japanese manga series by Hiroyuki Takei, originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump and was later given an anime adaptation. This series follows the adventures of

Yoh Asakura, an easy-going, young shaman training to eventually become the Shaman King by winning the Shaman Fight tournament. Like other shamans of this world, Yoh is not only able to commune with the dead but he also uses these spirits to battle other shamans. En route to becoming the Shaman King, Yoh must pass the trials set by the Patch tribe, battle/befriend many adversaries (some of the main ones are listed below), put a stop to the militant group X-Laws, and come face to face with Hao and his followers.

The following is an overly simplified explanation of how the mechanics of “Shaman-ism” works in this series. Basically, shaman uses various spirits as their main source of power. There are many classes of spirits, ranging from long dead people and recently dead people to elemental spiritsones based in nature and even angels. A shaman can integrate these spirits into their body to gain their knowledge, skills and personality. Alternatively, a shaman can imbue objects with the spirits to create “over souls” that gives a wide range of abilities, from increasing the power of a sword to making a large death nurse to forming ice and lighting bolts.
