Intro

The Kamen Rider collab (hereby referred to as KR) came out of nowhere, and as someone who loves KR, I had to write something about it. I’m a tad late to this party, the last few weeks have been busy for me, but I hope you all enjoy anyway :3. This article is not intended to be a reflection on how good the cards are or the worth of the machine as a whole. Instead, it’s a collection of my thoughts or feelings on how GungHo did on the collab as I give my own viewpoints on various aspects of the event. Unlike other posts I’ve written, I have not seen every season that was represented in the collab; so I’ll refrain from agreeing/disagreeing with something I don’t know about.

My History with Kamen Rider

Technically, my original experience with KR was the first of two US localizations of Kamen Rider, which happened to be a localization of Kamen Rider Black RX called simply, Masked Rider. I was 6 when this show came on the air, and it had that same feel as Power Rangers did (I was young and didn’t realize that both shows were created from Japanese super hero shows), so I immediately loved it.

(Seriously, 6 Year Old Ken ate this up and loved every moment of it)

However, time went on and I eventually forgot about Masked Rider, until one day about three years ago my best friend began to try to convince me to watch KR with him. I was originally against the idea, as I thought it was more directed towards kids (which it is); but eventually gave in and tried watching it. So my buddy and I began watching Kamen Rider OOO, and I was taken away; eventually watching KR on my own without anyone else.

It’s also the only IP that I’ve written about that I have merch for other than one Persona figure.

So, it wasn’t hard for me to use the 100+ Magic Stones we had gotten for free on JP and roll KR a ton.

What is Kamen Rider?

Kamen Rider is a live action series of super hero shows that airs in Japan alongside Super Sentai (the show that Power Rangers is based on) and is massively popular. While a few things stay the same thematically, each season is different; with the actors, characters, and story changing from season to season. Though every season is a new story, KR’s main premise is simple: A young man finds or comes into possession of a strange belt that through the use of various gadgets can transform into a Kamen Rider; gaining extraordinary abilities and uses them to protect the world from various villains of the week.

Kamen Rider is often compared to Super Sentai, however where Sentai focuses on a squad of super heroes, Kamen Rider typically focuses on one person as the main hero. As the season goes on, the story may introduce a second, third, or even fourth Kamen Rider who will eventually team up with the main Rider to kick the bad guys butts. There are some exceptions to this rule, as some seasons have a large cast of riders… these seasons are typically more dark and involve the Riders fighting each other to the death.

I am not joking when I say “to the death”…

About the Collab

Kamen Rider seasons, as a whole can be separated into two categories; Showa Rider and Heisei Rider. Both named after the Japanese Eras they were produced and aired in, both Showa and Heisei Rider are vastly different; and in PAD it’s no different. While the cards for the collab come from both eras, GungHo gave us two collab dungeons, each focusing on one of these two eras. Other than that, a majority of what we got were the main riders of different seasons as well as a few villains and even a secondary rider!

Below is a rundown of each of season represented in the collab; all the Showa seasons are from the Kamen Rider Wiki, while the Heisei seasons were written by one of the Community Discord members, Ryulong!

The story takes place in a world plagued by Shocker, a mysterious terrorist organization. To further its plans for world domination, Shocker recruited its agents through kidnapping, turning their victims into mutant cyborgs and, ultimately, brainwashing them. However, one victim named Takeshi Hongo escaped just before the final brainwashing. With his sanity and moral conscience intact, Hongo battled Shocker’s minions as the grasshopper-themed altered human superhero Kamen Rider 1. Another of Shocker’s victims, freelance photographer Hayato Ichimonji, had also been given cyborg implants, but was saved by Kamen Rider from the brainwashing process to become Kamen Rider #2. Assisted by motorcycle race team manager Tobei Tachibana and FBI agent Kazuya Taki, the Kamen Riders fought in both solo and partnered missions against both Shocker and its successor organization Gel-Shocker.

One night, Shiro Kazami accidentally witnesses a murder by the evil organization Destron, making him their next target. In their first attempt, they planted a bomb pebble into his coffee, but the attempt was foiled when Shiro’s sister, Yukiko, surprised him, causing him to spill his coffee. In their second attempt, they attacked him while practicing motorcycle racing with Tobei Tachibana. In their third attempt, a Destron soldier, disguised as a doctor, tried to put a poison shot in Shiro, while he was being transported to the hospital (after Destron’s second attempt), but Shiro regains consciousness and kills the soldier. Meanwhile, a young woman named Junko Tama stumbled upon Destron’s base. Suddenly, she was attacked by Destron. While trying to escape, she ran into Shiro, who was heading home on his motorcycle, but Shiro didn’t see the Destron soldiers. Surprised, Junko fainted and Shiro took her home. While Junko was being taken care of by Shiro’s family, Shiro reported her story to the police. When he returned home, he found his family being murdered by the Hasami Jaguar, a jaguar monster with blades for hands. Hasami Jaguar then prepares to kill Junko and Shiro, but is stopped by Shiro’s high school teacher, Takeshi Hongo, who transformed into Kamen Rider 1. Shortly after he drove off the Destron forces, Kamen Rider 2 shows up, but too late. A vengeance-fueled Shiro asked the Riders to turn him into a cyborg, but the Riders refused, explaining to Shiro what would happen if he did get turned into a cyborg: he wouldn’t be able to live up to his family. Then the Riders asked Junko for the location of the Destron base she stumbled upon earlier. The next day, the Riders infiltrate the base, only to get caught in a trap. Shiro shows up and saves their lives, but gets injured in the process. The Riders had no choice but to turn Shiro into a cyborg. When the Riders were attacked, and almost killed, by Kame Bazooka, Shiro shows up as Kamen Rider V3. Now, Shiro uses his new power to protect mankind against Destron.

A plane crashes in the Amazon rainforest, leaving young Amazon (Daisuke Yamamoto) stranded without his parents. Soon adopted by an Incan tribe, Amazon becomes a wild child, living off the land. However, Amazon’s idyllic existence is cut short when Gorgos, the Ten Faced Demon, massacres his village, slaughtering everyone except himself in search for the powerful “GiGi Armlet”, which gives the bearer fantastic power. Elder Bago, last of the Incas, gives the GiGi Armlet to Amazon for safekeeping while using his knowledge of Incan science and magic to perform a mystical “operation” on Daisuke, transforming him into the powerful “Kamen Rider Amazon” before he died. Arriving at Japan, Amazon battles Geddon without full knowledge of their reason of pursuing him. Befriending the nephew and niece of Professor Kousaka, Amazon learns the nature of the GiGi Armlet as he defeats Geddon and then the Garanda Empire.

Shigeru Jo joins the evil organization Black Satan after the death of his close friend Goro Numata, who he considered his mentor. He, promised power, and fueled by a desire for revenge, undergoes surgery to become one of Black Satan’s super warriors. However, Shigeru knows that Black Satan were in fact the murderers of his friend; he was using Black Satan in order to gain new powers. The newly powered up Shigeru escapes from the Black Satan headquarters before they can brainwash him into following their campaign of evil and becomes Kamen Rider Stronger. While escaping from Black Satan, Stronger meets Yuriko Misaki another cyborg warrior created by Black Satan who has the ability to transform into Electro-Wave Human Tackle. Together they fight the evil Black Satan and later the Delza Army to restore peace in Japan.

After being kidnapped by the cult Gorgom on the night of their 19th birthday, stepbrothers Kohtaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki were submitted to a cyborg surgery with the purpose of becoming the candidates for the next Gorgom Creation King. Both of them are called Century Kings and are destined to best each other in a final battle – whoever wins will become the next Creation King. Kohtaro escaped before getting brainwashed (which is the final step in the surgery), with help from his foster father, and turned against Gorgom. He soon finds out the horrific truth from his stepfather: Gorgom originally killed his true parents and, since both Kohtaro and Nobuhiko were born on the day of a solar eclipse, referred as “Black Sun” and “Shadow Moon”. Kohtaro, taking on the name of Kamen Rider Black, was determined to rescue his stepbrother from Gorgom while protecting Japan. However, later in the series, Nobuhiko emerged as Shadow Moon to fight Kohtaro with the survivor becoming the next Creation King.

After the downfall of Gorgom, Kohtaro Minami has gotten a job as a helicopter pilot in a business owned by the Sahara family, who have also taken him into their home. Kohtaro is later captured by the Crisis Empire and offered a place in their group. When Kohtaro refused, his King Stone was shattered and he was thrown into space where the sun’s radiation mutated his King Stone and he mutated into Kamen Rider BLACK RX. With his new powers, he battles the Crisis Empire and thwarts their plans to take over Earth.

Monsters called the Gurongi appear in modern day Tokyo and begin murdering people, as part of an event they seem to call “Gegeru”. Yusuke Godai, an archaeologist, uses the Arcle belt to transform into Kamen Rider Kuuga, as a member of a tribe of humans did thousands of years ago, to stop the Gurongi’s “Gegeru”, a vicious game to decide which of their kind will become their new leader.

Shinji Kido, an intern at a local newspaper, investigates the disappearances of people throughout the city and finds an Advent Card deck at an apartment where every reflective surface has been covered up. He then discovers the terrifying truth that people have been abducted into a Mirror World by monsters to be eaten. This also drags him into the Rider War, a fight between twelve other holders of Advent Decks to be granted a single wish once all of the other competitors have been killed. Shinji uses his deck to make a contract with the monster Dragreder, becoming Kamen Rider Ryuki to find a way to protect people from the Mirror World monsters, and to find a way to stop the Rider War from taking other lives.

Ryotaro Nogami, a young man who is seemingly the unluckiest man in the world, happens upon a strange train pass on the ground, and when he happens to enter a building at 11:11:11, he finds himself in a massive barren desert with a massive train as the only thing within. He then meets Hana, the Rider Pass’ original owner, who identifies him as a Singularity Point, a person immune to the effects of changes to the past. He has also unluckily become the host of Momotaros, a monster known as an Imagin who is one of several who have come back in time to this point in history to trick people into granting them their “wishes” so they may go further back in time to that person’s past to alter the future to ensure that the Imagin’s future is the one that will happen. Ryotaro’s unique status as a Singularity Point makes it so he is immune to Imagin powers, except they still possess him and act through his body, as without granting a wish they have no physical form. Together, Ryotaro and Momotaros (and later other Imagin) fight as Kamen Rider Den-O to help Ryotaro preserve the flow of time.

Futo, the Windy City, is threatened by monsters known as Dopants who are people who have gained a drug-like addiction to mysterious devices known as Gaia Memories. Private investigator Shotaro Hidari and his mysterious research companion Philip often find themselves investigating Dopant-related crimes and fuse together by means of the Double Driver and their own Gaia Memories to fight the monsters as Kamen Rider Double. Their investigation leads them to fight against the Sonozaki family who are the heads of the Gaia Memory drug smuggling ring, and themselves Dopants.

Emu Hojo is a doctor doing his residency in a hospital specializing in treating victims of the Bugster virus, a computer virus that managed to jump to humans during the Y2K threat that turns its victims into monstrous Bugsters whose essences are held in video game cartridges known as Gashats. In order to stop a Bugster, doctors undergo a surgery to gain antibodies against their infection and use a device known as a Gamer Driver to use Gashats to transform into Kamen Riders. Emu, who in his teenage years was the professional gamer “M”, obtains a Gamer Driver, and despite never having undergone the surgery to use it, transforms into Kamen Rider Ex-Aid to end the Bugster Virus menace as part of his desire to become a “Super Doctor” who will save the world, using his knowledge of video games to best the Bugsters.

Ten years ago on an expedition to Mars, an artifact known as Pandora Box was discovered. Upon its return to Earth in Japan, it was activated by someone there and caused the country to split up into three rival nations and also caused the emergence of monsters known as Smash, created from humans affected by the Nebula Gas created by the walls. The physicist Sento Kiryu is contracted by the government of Touto, the eastern region of Japan, to decipher the mystery behind Pandora Box and the Smash, which he does by transforming into Kamen Rider Build through the use of the Build Driver and Fullbottles, which contain a purified Nebula Gas created from defeated Smashes.

Sougo Tokiwa, a high school senior who wants to one day be a “king”, happens upon a mysterious clock-like Ridewatch on his bike one day. Soon after, he is approached by a woman named Tsukyomi who says that she has come from the future year 2068 where Sougo has apparently become the tyrannical ruler known as Oma Zi-O who uses the powers of all Kamen Riders to oppress humanity. She has come back in time to see if Sougo is actually the man she thinks he is, but his selflessness convinces her otherwise, despite her fellow Resistance fighter Geiz’s doubts that Sougo is indeed their future enemy. In an incident that leaves Sougo trapped in the year 2017 where he meets Sento Kiryu, he comes across the Time Jackers, members of another resistance cell in 2068 who have come back in time to kill Sento so their own chosen leader will become a tyrant, and Woz, one of Oma Zi-O’s closest supporters who gives Sougo the Ziku-Driver belt which he uses to transform into Kamen Rider Zi-O in order to fight the Another Riders created by the Time Jackers to kill him and change the past by eliminating the powers of the current Kamen Rider whose powers they copy. Sougo, Tsukuyomi, and Geiz who also can become a Kamen Rider work together travelling through time to prevent the Time Jackers from installing their own tyrannical king while keeping an eye on Sougo, whose ability to obtain other Kamen Riders’ powers through other Ridewatches is eerily similar to the evil Oma Zi-O they fear he may become.

In addition to the main characters from each of these seasons, we got the following characters:

PDX Icon Character Season Description
Shadow Moon Black / Black RX The main antagonist of Kamen Rider Black and Black RX; he was also kidnapped and brainwashed by Gorgom in order to become one of their new “Kings”.
Kamen Rider Ouja Ryuki One of the main antagonist and one of the thirteen Riders of Kamen Rider Ryuki. His main purpose in fighting was simply to gain power and kill a certain other rider.
Momotaros Den-O One of Den-Os companions and eventually becomes Kamen Rider Den-O himself!
Kamen Rider Poppy Ex-Aid One of Ex-Aids companions, and a major character in her season. Originally a supporting member of Ex-Aids team, she becomes a rider later on in the season after story events progress.
Kamen Rider Genm Zombie Action Gamer Ex-Aid One of my favorite characters from Ex-Aid, originally a villain; Genm slowly becomes an anti-hero, joining the main heroes after the real villain emerges and ruins his plans.

I was also asked by Chu and Reni to explain the details behind the Uvo’s of each 6 Star base; doing so is a series of spoilers. Even though it may seem like I’ve opened that can of worms, Kamen Rider is typically well written enough that what I’ve said already can’t really be construed as spoilers (with the exception of Genm); as the ending of each season can come as a complete shock to some. So, click the spoiler tag below for each 6 Star base to learn more about their Uvo! (Note that Riders 1 and Black are WAY less spoilery than Den-O or Ex-Aid. This is due to how Showa Rider and Heisei Rider are written and presented.)

Kamen Rider 1
Kamen Rider 1 and 2 typically fight against Shocker on their own terms, rarely teaming up ever. However; when they do team up they’re a devastating combo and the art features it well, with them doing a combination “Rider Kick”! (I tried to find a video for this, but failed)
Kamen Rider Black
Each of Black’s Uvos are just his Black RX form that he acquires at the beginning of Black RX, and that forms alternate forms. Robo Rider is bulkier and more tanky, made to take hits while limiting his mobility, while Bio Rider is the exact opposite; faster at the expense of defense.
Kamen Rider Den-O
Ryotaro (Kamen Rider Den-O) is at any given moment, a single man possessed by one or more beings known as “Imagin”. After certain events transpire in the season, Ryotaro loses all of his Imagin Companions (with the exception of Momotaros), and from his grief a special cell phone was created from their remains…

I know this sounds weird and confusing to you guys, but it’s making me really want to watch Den-O.

Combined with his Den-O belt, Ryotaro can use this phone to call upon the spirits of all of his Imagin companions and take them all in at the same time, resulting in his Climax Form!

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid
As mentioned before, Kuroto Dan (Kamen Rider Genm) starts out of a primary antagonist of Ex-Aid. However, after certain story heavy events take place, the true villain emerges; Kamen Rider Cronus… (No not that Cronus …) Cronus is one of the most over powered bad guys I’ve ever seen in the nine seasons of Rider I have seen, so much so that my buddy and I were confused on how a guy who could literally stop time, kick everyone’s asses, then start time back up when he was good and ready, could be stopped. I’m not making this up…
Not only that, but because of who this person is… (Something I won’t spoil!) He’s able to REVERSE ACTUAL TIME AND RESET THINGS. So after Kuroto makes the Muteki Gamer Gachat, Emu (Kamen Rider Ex-Aid), gets it and does become powerful enough to stand up to Cronus… until Cronus undoes it and causes Kuroto to go literally insane from over work while he and Emu attempt to create another one in secret. (I know I’m using literally a lot here… but I’m not exaggerating. SURPRISE DOUBLE VIDEO!)

As you can see, there’s a lot of lore flying around;  so without further delay, let’s get into the nitty gritty!

What was done right

The Belts/Drivers

The staple of Kamen Rider are their belts (referred to later as Drivers during the Heisei Era); as in most cases it’s the source of their power and what each Rider uses to transform into a Kamen Rider. Without their belt, a Rider is weak and prone to attacks (a fact used on several occasions in different seasons).

Honestly if they didn’t include the Belts as equip evos I would have been sorely disappointed and even might have been crushed by their exclusion. Really glad GungHo added them!

Robo Rider and Bio Rider

I excluded these guys simply because they’re just alternate forms of Black RX (Who is also just an enhanced form of Black), which is why Black RX, Robo, and Bio are all evolutions of Black! Do I completely agree with their inclusion as opposed to other riders? Not entirely, from what I understand Black and Black RX was the most popular season from the Showa Era, so the fact he got some special treatment makes sense.

Shadow Moon

While we’re on the subject of Black RX; Shadow Moon was an excellent addition to feature in the Showa Rider dungeon, as he was the main antagonist in the most popular season of the Showa Era!

Kamen Rider Ouja

This guy is great. Probably one of the most well-known villains in Rider (seeing as they brought him back multiple times, most recently in a Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Special); and with the resume to prove it! First of all, Ryuki was one of those series that have different endings; the main season ending and a special Directors Cut movie ending (which is vastly different from the original season). In both iterations of Ryuki, Ouja (aka Takeshi Asakura) was vicious and a reviled killer, and is one of the few Riders to not die during a Rider Battle in the original series. He was skilled, deadly, and kicked a lot of ass for being a villain; making it so his dragon killer awakenings are fitting.

My only criticism is he should have gotten one machine killer awakening; as his primary goal in the Rider War was to kill Kamen Rider Zolda, who used guns and a giant war mech to kick ass himself.

Kamen Rider Genm

Okay, Genm (Kuroto Dan) is a treasure and one of the characters that made Kamen Rider Ex-Aid amazing. There’s not much I can say about him that wouldn’t be a pretty big spoiler, but the fact they added him at all was great as he was loved by the community. The best thing GungHo did was make him a God type; as his character in the show was essentially god like and could never die.

His actor even acknowledged it (and his followers and other KR fans began popping down memes of his character~)

Missed Opportunities

The Buggle Driver

More specifically, the Buggle Driver II. Every REM card obtainable with this machine can evolve into the Belt/Driver they use with one notable exception; Poppy . There was no reason to exclude her driver or to make it so she was the only Rider to not receive an Assist Evo. Her driver was different from Ex-Aids and Genms (thought Genm did use it for a while), and it wouldn’t stand out like it is now since she’s missing that evolution…

Kamen Rider OOO

Okay, hear me out on this cause it’ll take a bit of explaining to understand why GH done goofed…

Kamen Rider OOO (pronounced owes), occurs after W’s season, and involves a migrant worker named Eiji Hino fighting against a race of creatures known as Greeed with the help of his OOO Driver and strange coins called “Core Medals” in order to transform into Kamen Rider OOO. My reasoning for being outraged at his exclusion is two-fold: KR Event Medals and Kamen Rider Black .

Event Medals should be a no brainer; we could have collected different Core Medals in the collab dungeons to use in the Monster Exchange instead of the reskinned ones we got. Other than that, if we did get OOO, his setup could have been similar to Blacks evolution line, where we got Black RX, Robo Rider, Bio Rider, and his Belt; OOOs could have given us the following:

Super TaToBa; OOOs ultimate form.

PuToTyra, aka the Invincible Combo

TaJaDol, aka the Blazing Combo

though, to be fair, they could have done something similar with W… and other riders if they wanted. But the fact that we could have gotten more specialized event medals with OOOs makes me feel that this was the biggest waste.

Other Thoughts

Lack of Voice Acting

To be fair, some of the Riders featured are old… so as nice as voice acting could be; I completely understand it’s exclusion. In the end it’s one of those “missed opportunity, but completely understandable” things.

Possible NA/KR Appearance?

Probably not, the only hope for a non-JP appearance of this collab exists because Kamen Rider Black RX and Kamen Rider Ryuki were both localized in NA; Ryuki actually winning Daytime Emmys! But even with this, I extremely doubt we’ll see Kamen Rider hit NA.

The Future of Kamen Rider x Puzzle and Dragons

Could we see Kamen Rider return? Maybe! We got it now because of the Heisei Era’s 20th anniversary; but Kamen Rider is massive in Japan with its own culture surrounding it much like we have our own super hero culture surrounding IPs from the Marvel and DC universes. Kamen Rider does seem like the collab we could see more than once. But if it does return, what could it bring with it? Well, hopefully Poppy’s driver as an evolution, that’s for sure! But what riders could they also add if they wanted to? Well, as much as I’d like to speculate… there are dozens of choices to choose from; so your guess is as good as mine!

Closing

I loved this collab and it spirited me away much like the Persona collab did with me. I felt GungHo did well with implementing it; even though I shy’d away from discussing mechanics for the most part. Seeing all the Riders they selected for the collab really brought back some of the memories I had watching KR with my buddies, and makes me excited for the future of Kamen Rider!
