[Non-PAD] Site’s Situation, Explained

Tl;dr: Basically the site exploded (lol) and I’m trying to patch it up.

What happened in the past 6 hours

This whole thing really started a week or so ago, when the site started loading really slowly.

I’ve been trying to patch it up, but even more problems surfaced. I had 3 errors back to back that basically I had no idea how to fix. This morning (my time, so last night for most of you), the whole site went down and I struggled to even gain access.

Following that was a meltdown, with me almost wanting to quit dealing with everything and wanting to shut the site down. Well, some people convinced me and I went back to face the issues (there’s literally only me on the site 99% of the time).

Chu has been working with me on trying to find the issues, but I believe the origin is a random update that caused a cascade of errors (we originally thought Chu’s codes were the cause, but that’s not the case). The only working solution was to deactivate most of the current site’s coding and revert to the current state – the default style.

This means most of the custom things I’ve done needs to be re-incorporated. 2 years worth of things.

What will happen next?

For now (and maybe until this weekend), you’ll have to suffer the default theme with me.

I’ll slowly add some things back, such as countdown timer and some simpler things that won’t cause more chaos. Hopefully I’ll have some more positive things after a few beers tonight. I’m literally trying to do all this during a science conference.

Apologies to everyone about this, words cannot explain how frustrated I am, and I hope everyone can understand. The site is as important to me and to you.

P.S: I’m not kidding when I said I’m not a programmer and is a noob at this.

Latest update

12/20, 7pm JST: 1 beer later, REM overview now looks acceptable in my eyes. New cards section now fixed, so at least that’s back. Next on the list will be some more features on the post itself.

Things that I’ve taken down for now are:

  • Top posts in menu
  • The fancy search (so you get the ugly search which works)
  • The entire front page layout

12/20, 11pm JST: A bit more visual update and the return of mobile menu. Good progress though!

12/21, 12:51am JST: Known issues – Menu broken, missing stuff on front page.

12/23, 2am JST: With help and suggestions from Izenn (of PadBox), most of the site is back. Guerrilla will be down for now.

12/23 10pm JST: Top posts removed from the menu bar for performance improvements. The site should be faster than before the apocalypse! Guerrilla will be moved to Current Events page hopefully by new year.

  1. Take it slow and take your time! Programming doesn’t like to be rushed. We’ll wait patiently as this site and what you and your small team do is wonderful and we really appreciate the effort!

    1. Thanks Yellow, really appreciate the comment! I’m sure the site likes to go through an annual apocalypse on a yearly basis now!

  2. I think most, if not all, of us who come here, can agree that we are willing to wait as long as it takes to get everything back up and running.

  3. Take all the time you need! Also, while you’re programming, try forgetting about the real world and focus on your work. Find the fun in it (because I know that programming IS fun) so that you can enjoy the experience. Maybe you’ll find out something new along the way, and then learn from it, maximizing your abilities even further.

When it feels like you work alone, talk to other people and tell them about your situation. It WILL make you feel super better.

We understand your struggle and wish that we can help you in some way although we aren’t programmers. Thank you for all your charity work. I check the website, like, 3-10 times a day or more because something new always pops up (and I love it). And thinking about the time taken to code all those buffs for Final Fantasy (I think it was?) tells me how hardworking you and your team is.

Again, thank you, Reni and friends. Without Blogging Mama, PAD JP wouldn’t exist for me. 🤗🤗🤗♥️
