Combo Orb – An Overview

Introduced in Version 15.1 update was the Combo Orb awakening. Some people found this underwhelming… But what is it, and is it that bad? Let’s find out!
Combo Orb Awakening
Combo Orb (コンボドロップ) awakening was added in Version 15.1 update and basically forgotten until Ryune and Sylvie’s new Mega Evolutions.
To activate this awakening, you have to match exactly 12 orbs of the card’s attribute to spawn a new Combo orb. This special orb have a pea-looking symbol on it, and will be of a random attribute (5 attributes and Heal only).
These orbs will spawn once the awakening is activated. Match these orbs to gain 1 extra combo!
Important Notes
- Maximum of 3 combo orbs can be on the board at a time.
- If you have two awakenings, you get 2 combo orbs from matching 12 orbs.
- You can make combo orbs using sub-attribute of the card! So you can match 12 Light orbs with Sylvie in your team, to make a Combo Orb on your board.
- This doesn’t count towards leader skills that require multiple combos of the same color. For example, you cannot use this to match 1 set of orbs to activate Yog-Sothoth’s leader skill.
- The combo orb effect is gone if it’s on other orbs such as Jammer orbs.
- This combo addition does not add to scores in dungeons (Ranking, S-Rank, etc.).
Combo Orb In Action
Sylvie Team, Wood System with Enishi (Daks)
Daks made a Enishi system with Sylvie lead! Since 2 Sylvies are present, there are 2 awakenings available, so each 12 Wood orb match gives 2 Combo Orbs.
Sylvie Team – Dios swipe (Yuukoru)
Yuukoru showcased how one can make use of these to farm dungeons. Featuring good old Zeus-Dios !
The key here is the Indigo assist on Kaede , that generates 3 locked and . The locked orbs separates the board to 12 Wood orbs on each side.
By the time he reached the boss Cauchemar (absorbs 4 combos or lower), the setup will give 5 combos total (2 combos from the Wood matches, +3 from the Combo Orbs). Very clever setup.
Making 7 combos with a swipe (Suu)
Suu demonstrated that you can abuse this to make 7-combos in a swipe, with some preparation.
He first generated 3 Combo Orbs on the board using dark attribute of Ryune. At [1:44], he then popped Toshiro , Carat , and then Morrigu (+3 combos for 1 turn) to reach 7 combos total.
Board setups for 12 connected orbs
Beside the obvious 2×6 row, can you think of more ways to match 12 connected orbs? Japanese players already did some thinking, and here are some images taken from this video by Jyaponika Studio.
7. Full board + Justaway
We love Justaway from Gintama Collab as you recall I made a post just for it!
8. Full board + Kotaro Katsura (or Assist)
Of course we can’t forget the other bomb-maker from Gintama Collab!
Fun Facts
Combo Orbs don’t disappear with Spinners.
Yes they are Spinner-safe! Only the attribute of the orb changes when a Combo Orb is stuck in a spinner. (Video credit: fether)
Combo Orb works even after attribute change.
Paulo was wondering whether Combo Orb would be made still, if the card with the awakening (Ryune here) has changed to another attribute. Fether went ahead and tested this!
He used
Kopis as assist on Ryune to change Ryune’s attribute to Fire, then orb changed with Enra. Matching exactly 12 Fire orbs still gave a Combo Orb.
Thoughts
With the introduction of these orbs, we can see more variations in the future in matching. Row teams certainly gained a lot of power, with the ability to make more combos without relying on +combo actives! We can envision seeing more builds utilizing this in the future, especially in farm teams. Though to be completely honest, unless you strategically plan on using Combo Orb, I doubt most people will find it useful in an everyday situation.
Though I haven’t played row teams since RoBu (Ronia x Lu Bu ), I certainly will add row teams to my current fun teams to play and maybe try Combo Orb on easier dungeons for fun. 🙂 Whether I’ll master matching 12 orbs exactly though… that’s another story.
Also, we can now have so many things to put onto an orb. What will be next, at the bottom left corner? Maybe we’ll find out in some random update one day…
